Iacocca buys 1st Chrysler hybrid
Sunday, October 05, 2008
The Oakland Press -- Former Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca has bought the company’s first hybrid. Steve Landry, Chrysler LLC executive vice president of sales, disclosed this week that he had just recently delivered a 2009 Chrysler Aspen hybrid to Iacocca at his Southern California home. Iacocca had said in his recent book on leadership that the U.S. has to find ways to reduce its dependence on foreign oil through new technology. Before he retired in 1992, Iacocca was instrumental in pushing the auto industry into equipping cars with air bags. The new Aspen hybrid, the first ever sold by Chrysler, is equipped with a new two-mode system developed jointly by Chrysler, General Motors Corp., BMW and Daimler AG at the development center the four-companies share in Troy.

Well, it did say he 'bought' it, but I bet he didn't have to haggle much :)

I'm thinking about trickle down economics, the idea that if the companies and the rich have the money, they'll now how best to let it trickle down and keep the economy going, the problem is that when times get tough, they hoard like the banks and corporations are doing now, doesn't really work to well.

No expanding my idea of the high credit for purchasing hybrids, this in effect is a trickle up economics, give people the money, in a sense the lower cost of goods and services caused by the lower fuel cost spurred by the lower demand as a result of more people driving fuel efficient vehicles is putting more money in peoples hands to spend, thus money trickling up and spurring economic growth. It' could work!!!!

old news, this came out yesterday....lol

ok, why can't we work with the the technology we have today, we have diesel vehicles that are cleaner then ever and yield high mileage, hybrids that have proven to last and work well, lets continue to expand on those technologies we have, put a hybrid in every american who is planning to purchase a new vehicle and can afford it. give them incentives to purchase them by giving them large tax credits to off set the higher price, with more fuel efficient vehicles on the road, America will consume fewer quantities of gasoline, reducing demand and causing fuel prices to plummet, this in effect will spur on the economy, prices of goods and services will drop(inflation will be in check) and the economy may start to grow again. Take the 4 billion tax we plan on taking from the oil companies and use that for the tax credit. Remember we are 3% of the world population and consume 25% of the worlds petroleum!!!!

I think most people are more worried about keeping their jobs at this
particular time instead of thinking about buying a hybrid SUV.

That's a good start for a SUV but we need to start making and the public needs to start buying smaller vehicles.

Alternative transportation strategies... If Lee Iacocca thinks a hybrid is a good first step toward alternative transportation technologies, then I am with him...

If we keep on with oil, we will continue to be governed by political interests who are too weak to do anything smart for our future and who will cave to the Middle East because the addicts are screaming for cheap gasoline...

As Iacocca said, "lead, follow, or get out of the way", and domestic automakers have got out of the way or followed unfortunately they are not leading. They are still following and at a distance that may not allow them to ever catch other automakers, hence jobs are gone to never return.

Once you lose a consumer they may never give you another chance to regain their confidence or money.

Cool, he got a hybrid for a dollar to add to his car collection... Now what does that do to get a reasonably priced to the average American alternative vehicles?

"we also need to concentrate our efforts to all other options...

flex-fuel
CNG
LNG
Diesel
SVO/WVO"

I would add alternative transportation, such as trains, motorcycles/scooters, and cycling.

there isn't enoigh raw materials to build all the light weight batteries these hybrids use... limited batter pack production = limited vehicle production...

we also need to concentrate our efforts to all other options...

flex-fuel
CNG
LNG
Diesel
SVO/WVO

and most of all, public transportation, we need to rebuild our rail system and vastly improve the metro bus systems for those cities that have them

I wish I could afford to just go out and by a car like Iacocca. I have talk with a friend from a dealership and he said that what you pay to buy a hybrid right now. It really isn't saving you right now. Wait and prices will go down

Let's keep on with testing and trying hybrids - the price will come down over time and OPEC will still be OPEC.

and taking all those SUVs off the market means a huge loss of jobs in the factories that make them, and all the surrounding communities... not easy if you live in one of those communities... yes, the market demand for better vehicles will changes things over time, but you can bet those communities will lobby not to close those factories when the time comes... even a good idea, like changing over a factory from making SUVs to making hybrids is not something that can happen in a week..
