GM's Lutz says hybrids, electrics are future

Detroit News -- General Motors Co. will keep making big trucks and SUVs because U.S. buyers demand them, but a major portion of them will be gas-electric hybrids in the near future, retiring Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said.

Lutz didn't give details, but said GM must apply hybrid technology to more vehicles in order to meet fuel-economy standards that will rise 40 percent to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The cost will likely be spread across GM's lineup, since charging individual buyers for a hybrid system would make vehicles too expensive. GM has seven hybrids in its lineup now.

we can hope that the more they make, the more the price comes down, kelsielee. But there's lots of R&D that we're paying for in these vehicles. If it were more spread across all models (even to the tune of massive consumer outcries) then it would bring the price down some).

Maybe hybrids and electric vehicles will become less expensive and they become more common (and economies of scale kick in). Otherwise, I will only be able to afford them once they are used vehicles.

I am just waiting to see when Congress will open an investigation into GM's power steering problems. Yes, they too killed people - but of course, not as spectacularly as 'Yos did.

kfinto: you got one thing right: the way most people think. Unfortunately, no one wants to pay more for technology that's not in the car they drive, but do you know how the manufacturers and dealers come up with the pricing of new car models? Those are spread across. Just that Lutz finally is coming out and confirming things.

"retiring Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said" This is the thinking that turned the company in to Government Motors.

How many people really need a big truck or an SUV? Just a status symbol to most of them. Go by many factories and these vehicles outnumber regular cars. Why? Is it I can afford more than you can? Ridiculous.

hard to beleive anything coming from a company constantly playing management musical chairs. gm has been so out of touch for so long they don't know which way things are going.

Almost anybody that owns one of these electric things needs a regular car in the garage as well. It's going to be a long time before these can serve as a direct replacement for the plain old gasoline powered automobile for several different reasons.

so we will be forced to purchase a hybrid? That adds a lot of expensive parts to the vehicle with little gas mileage gain if any! I would rather have a nice Diesel engine with torque to spare. How will I pull my camper? Now I have a Blazer S-10 and a 3200lb camper. There is no midsized SUV to pull this camper, so I have to purchase a large SUV that pulls it great but I have to live with lower mileage all the time. Now I get 20mpg without the camper and 10 with, but a Yukon would get 15mpg all the time.

So to keep the cost of hybrid technology vehicles down, GM will spread the cost across GM's lineup??? Please keep making statements like that Lutz. I won't ever buy another Government Motors vehicle with that kind of thinking!

They had 75 mpg carburetor's in the 1980's but bowed down to the big oil companies and kept them off from the vehicles. So what is the hold up now??

While I agree that plug-ins are the future, someone needs to convince the electric companies to pull the trigger and implement a country-wide smart grid now, IMHO. Huge investment, yes, but like the auto industry, they're not going to be allowed to go bankrupt. I really don't want to deal with roving blackouts/brownouts while they scramble to make infrastructure improvements down the line!

If the guy in charge of rebranding the company thinks electrics are the future, I have no hope for the long term viability of General Motors. Plug-ins are a dead end.

But he was pushed to the side-lines by the new team. I hope they have a better master plan. But Government Motors still has the UAW millstone, so this bankruptcy is just part of the road to oblivion (or divorce from the UAW).

>Keep buying foreign autos and you will be out of jobs. It amazes me how ignorant some Americans are. <

Sorry. Domestic manufacturers need to produce quality vehicles that we want to own and drive. The recent difficulties faced by Toyota (sorry to bring that up, MyVue08 -- I know you love the topic, lol!) demonstrate that foreign makes are not without problems. But VW and other Euro sources are formidable.

This attitude from GM could succeed. We need to reduce dependence on foreign oil and electric vehicles assist with that. The grid does not stretch that far yet.
